Occupational Therapy Month – Student Perspectives

As an ongoing celebration of Occupational Therapy (OT) Month, Paragon Rehabilitation is proud to support the field of Occupational Therapy by providing supervision to OT students! A recent OT student shared her positive experience with Paragon:

“Occupational Therapy is all about adapting. As a fieldwork student at Wellbrooke of Westfield I learned how to get creative with treatment plans to keep my clients engaged. Sometimes you have to think outside of the box if you are limited by supplies, weather, or even a global pandemic. For one recent patient, she was having trouble participating with therapy. My CI, Melissa Horan, and I came up with a fun way to incorporate bilateral upper extremity stretching/ exercises into a functional task that tested not only her strength but her cognition and imagination. Each exercise we incorporated a different aspect of gardening. For example, we would pull weeds, promoting range of motion in shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hands. We would then scoop soil with our hands, fill the holes with seeds, and water our soil, creating a garden bed of sunflowers right in her room. For this patient, this was something that she had fun with and was able to participate in from the comfort and safety of her recliner. As an OT you have to get creative and always make it meaningful!”
